Cheech talks a lot. I mean, A LOT. The funny thing is that about 90% of what she says makes absolutely no sense. Whether it's because she puts strange words together or because she simply makes up words, we find ourselves trying to hide our giggles every time she opens her mouth. In many ways, I am really excited for her to start speaking full sentences, but a part of me will be sad when this incredibly hysterical stage is gone. I have some of her gibberish on tape, but I still want to be able to remember as much as possible, so I figured I'd keep record of some of it in this post.
Here goes... Real Talk with Cheech:
"WUF WUF WUF!"
-barking at our neighbor's dog
"saat?"
-"what's that?"
"SAAT?!!"
-"what's that?" when we don't answer quickly enough.
"shabalommmme"
-your guess is as good as mine on this one, but she says it ALL the time.
"shamana des"
-see above.
"shamana des"
-see above.
"nope"
-she uses this response when asked a question. for example, "is it nap time, cheech?" "nope."
"no"
-this, however, is used when she's actually told to do something. for example, "cheech, it's nap time." "no."
"yeah? yeah? YEEEAAAH!"
-she tends to say this completely out of the blue as if she's just been asked a question. it is quite confusing.
"peas"
-"please"
"five six"
-i don't know if she doesn't actually know how to count from 1-4, or if she just doesn't know how to say the numbers 1-4.
"NINE!"
-the only number she seems to recognize visually (she gets pretty excited about it)
"mowse"
-mickey mouse
"shhh"
-this is what she says if i ask, "where's papa?", which implies that he's sleeping.
"mompa"
-getting "mama" and "papa" straight can sometimes be difficult.
*More self portraits. I'm often surprised by catalogues of these in my phone.

Children learning to talk is one of the funniest things ever. Actually, I couldn't say my name... hence this "Naurnie" business.
ReplyDeleteI *love* this. You should start a Tumblr like Cara's for W&P. Kids are hilarious.
ReplyDeleteI love this! My 1 1/2 year old son sounds exactly the same (only speaking German). It's so funny. Sometimes he says really long sentences and I don't understand a word. Then he looks at me very confused and can't understand why I don't understand.
ReplyDeleteI have to write down some of his words, too, good idea!
Adorable. I especially love the completely unintelligible ones, and also "mompa." So good of you to record this stuff!
ReplyDeleteSo cute. I love nonsensical kid talk.
ReplyDeleteAre you speaking to her in Spanish as well? How is that going? I think I remember you posting about that when you were pregnant.
she does get some spanish, but not as much as i had hoped for. joe goes to work around 3 or 4, so most of her day is filled with english. she definitely understands spanish seeing as it's the only language that is spoken to her at her grandma's house, and she seems to do just fine. who knows? she might surprise us with a few spanish words one of these days. there are TONS of spanish immersion schools and programs in the area, so i'm hoping to get her into one of those.
Deletei realized the reason it was SO easy for me to learn and hold onto spanish was because it was literally the only language i heard until i started preschool. my entire family only spoke spanish, and although we lived in LA, we lived in a spanish speaking community. i bet i was pretty confused the first time someone started speaking english to me. ;)
Ha. Our almost four-year-old calls us "Maw-dee" (not sure how to spell the combination of mommy and daddy) when he's talking to both of us or a parent in general. It's always struck me as very efficient.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this phase when toddlers are learning to talk. The things they come up with are so awesome. My daughter surprises me everyday with new words and phrases of the most unlikely or strangely sensible sort.
